Tell us a bit about what got you into your career.

Many years ago, when my health wasn’t the best, a friend introduced me to Qigong which opened new ways of healing compared to conventional doctors who prescribed pharmaceutical medications. A 10-day intensive workshop of Qigong with Master Zhen Hua Yang and continual training over 7 years transformed my body and mind. It was never my aim to teach Qigong, but my teacher Master Yang encouraged me to do so. Since 2012 I am sharing my knowledge and practice of Qigong with likeminded people.

About 6 years ago I received my first acupuncture and Chinese herbal treatment from a practitioner in Cairns. She became a very dear friend. In that time, I also met a Reflexologist who was happy to train me in the art of foot and hand reflexology. Learning and experiencing the benefits of Qigong, Acupuncture and Reflexology treatments have made a huge difference in my life.

At the time of Covid-19 I moved from the Tropical North of Queensland to Tasmania on to a 5-acre bush property. The time of isolation inspired me to search the internet for deeper studies in Daoism and Chinese Medicine.

I met and was inspired by Damo Mitchell and Rony Edlund who both amazed me with their deep knowledge of Qigong, Neigong and Neidan. Then I added the study of Traditional Chinese Medicine. While studying in my first year of TCM with Damo Mitchell I came upon the app A Manual of Acupuncture, which linked me to the Jing app.

How important is self-care advice for your patients?

When students and patients are in a class environment, I find it important to introduce them to the possibilities of healing the body and mind. Many who come regularly experience a very big shift and improvement in their wellbeing which is wonderful to see. I also like to give advice on healthy eating and a balanced lifestyle. But it can be difficult during times when students are away, which is why I also offer Zoom Classes.

Has Jing changed your approach to helping patients with self-care?

I am deeply thankful for all the people involved in creating the Jing app and website. This is such a practical tool and accessing it is quite simple. It takes away a big workload for me doing research and providing the right assistance. It is ready to use for most, who wants to improve their wellbeing, including myself. I can tell from my own experience that all the tools provided work wonders (not that I have managed to try all of them yet).

Everyone has times when they need some help and knowledge about to treat different ailments without always having to resort to painkillers to numb pain and discomfort. I find it is also a fun and easy way to learn the different acupuncture and acupressure points while studying and teaching.

How easy is it to use the Jing app and website in your daily practice?

With the improvements in version 2 of Jing, it is now so easy to introduce students after class or after a Reflexology treatment, by showing them on a bigger screen what the app looks like and what it can offer. They can then download the app on the spot and I show them how to connect immediately on their mobile phone. They are then ready to use Jing when they get home. Or if they prefer, they can go onto their computer or laptop. This deepens the connection to student and patients - everyone benefits.

What do your patients say about Jing and the self-care material?

When I ask students or patients about their experience, it is so good to see when they are happy with it. From here I can then explore with them where to go next and what would benefit them. I try not to overwhelm them with too much material but give more when needed, or change the programme so as not to make them feel bored as well.

Can you give us an example of a recent case where Jing has been useful?

Just last week two ladies had wrist problems - one had a carpal tunnel operation a few weeks ago and was so happy with Sarah’s self-massage exercise that she was telling me she was treating the wrist and arms more than once a day as it feels so beneficial.

Another person has hearing problems and tinnitus and is amazed about the improvement he’s experienced.

I can just say that I am so thankful to have found this tool which has enabled me to help more people to get well and improved the quality of all of our lives. It just takes a little effort to do the exercises.
